5 Signs Your Water Tank Needs Cleaning Right Now

Your water tank quietly affects your family's health every day, but most people never think about what is inside it until something goes wrong. Whether you are on BWSSB supply, borewell water, or a mix, these are the five clear signs it is time for a professional clean, and the smaller warnings worth catching early.

1. A Foul Smell or Odd Taste

This is often the first flag. A musty, earthy, or metallic smell means bacteria, algae, or sediment has built up in the tank. It is more common in humid months and on borewell water, which carries more sediment than treated supply. Any change in taste or smell is worth acting on, since it affects drinking, cooking, and bathing water alike.

2. Discoloured Water

Run the tap and look closely. Yellow, brown, or cloudy water signals rust, dirt, or algae. Common causes are:

  • Rust from old tank interiors, especially in older plastic or metal tanks
  • Sediment, more common on borewell supply
  • Algae, where sunlight reaches the water through cracks or a gap in the lid
  • Dead insects or debris entering through a poorly sealed lid

In apartments, one overhead tank feeds many homes, so discolouration is worth flagging to the association quickly.

3. Skin Irritation or Stomach Trouble

Unexplained skin rashes, itching after a shower, or recurring stomach upsets can point to the water. Bacteria like E. coli and other pathogens thrive in a neglected tank, and children and elderly members are the most vulnerable. If several people at home fall ill with no clear cause, the water supply is worth checking early.

4. You Cannot Remember the Last Clean

Be honest about when the tank was last cleaned. If you are not sure, or it has been more than six months, it is due. The Bureau of Indian Standards recommends cleaning at least twice a year, and a schedule of before and after the rainy season works well here. Many apartment associations now make a twice-yearly clean part of the maintenance calendar.

5. Visible Sludge or Slime

If you look inside and see a layer of sludge at the bottom, greenish slime on the walls, or floating debris, do not wait. That buildup is dirt, biofilm, mineral deposits, and bacteria, and it also cuts the tank's usable capacity. A few smaller warnings often go with it:

  • Lower water pressure at the taps
  • Clogged aerators and shower heads
  • White scale on bathroom fittings
  • Water appliances failing more often

Why These Signs Point Back to the Tank

Most of these warnings share one cause: a layer of sediment and biofilm at the bottom and walls of the tank. Sediment is the settled minerals and grit that water carries in, heavier on borewell supply. Biofilm is the slime that bacteria build once they take hold in still, warm water, and it traps odour and colour and sheds bacteria back into every draw. Because the layer sits below the outlet much of the time, the water can look fine until a refill or a pressure change stirs it up, which is why the trouble often seems to come and go.

A rinse cannot shift either problem. The sediment has to be scooped and scrubbed out, and the biofilm lifted by hand before disinfection, or it simply regrows. That is the difference a proper clean makes, and why the signs return within weeks after a job that skips the scrubbing.

Professional cleaning is more than removing visible dirt: it means full draining, scrubbing, disinfection with food-grade chemicals, and safe disposal of the dirty water. That is why a professional water tank cleaning is the right response to any of these signs.

Key takeaways
  • A musty, earthy, or metallic smell or taste is usually the first sign
  • Yellow, brown, or cloudy water points to rust, sediment, or algae
  • Unexplained skin irritation or stomach upsets can trace back to the tank
  • If you cannot remember the last clean, or it is over six months, it is due
  • Visible sludge or slime inside means clean now, not later
