In Bengaluru's hot and humid weather, water tanks collect sediment, algae, bacteria, and other contaminants faster than in most cities. Whether you have an overhead tank, an underground sump, or a Sintex tank, regular professional cleaning is not a luxury. It keeps the water your family uses every day safe and clean.
Contaminated tanks are one of the main causes of waterborne illness. Dust, bird droppings, algae, rust, and sediment quietly build up in your stored water every day. Most homes here also use borewell water, which carries extra minerals and sediment that settle at the bottom of the tank over time.
Your underground sump is where water is stored before it gets pumped up to the overhead tank, so anything left dirty in the sump ends up everywhere else in your home. Sumps are larger and harder to reach, so dirt, sand, and mineral deposits settle at the bottom and slowly reduce how much water the sump can actually hold. Over time this also affects the smell and taste of your water.
That is why we recommend cleaning the tank and the sump together. We use a heavy-duty dewatering pump to empty the sump fully, then clean every surface with high-pressure jets and remove the settled sludge. Doing both gives you clean water at every point, from the sump where it is stored to the tap where you use it.
For both tanks and sumps we fully drain the unit, remove the sludge by hand, jet-clean all the inside surfaces, scrub them with eco-friendly solutions, disinfect, and finish with a clean rinse. Our team works the same day across all areas of Bengaluru.
| Water Source | Recommended Frequency | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cauvery / BWSSB water | Once a year | Relatively clean supply, less sediment |
| Borewell water | Every 6 months | Higher mineral and sediment load |
| Mixed / tanker water | Every 4 to 6 months | Variable quality, faster contamination |
| Sump (any source) | Every 6 months | Sediment settles faster in underground tanks |

Water storage tanks in Bengaluru accumulate three types of contamination over time. Sediment, fine particles of rust, sand, soil, and minerals, settles at the bottom and forms a sludge layer that gradually contaminates water drawn from the tank. Algae grow on the interior walls of tanks exposed to any light, producing musty taste and odour and creating a surface where bacteria colonise. Biofilm, a thin layer of bacteria and their secretions, coats the interior walls and recontaminates water even after the tank is refilled with clean water. In Bengaluru's borewell water supply, mineral content accelerates both sediment buildup and biofilm formation. A tank that has not been cleaned in over 12 months is almost certainly contaminated regardless of whether the water looks clear.
Most Bengaluru homes have a two-stage water system: water enters the underground sump first, is pumped up to an overhead tank, and flows by gravity to taps and appliances. If only the overhead tank is cleaned but the sump remains dirty, contamination from the sump is continuously pumped into the clean overhead tank. The cycle of contamination never breaks. Cleaning both together is essential for genuinely clean water through your entire supply system. KBS offers combined tank and sump cleaning on the same visit, a single service that breaks the contamination cycle at both points.
Bengaluru's borewell water supply carries significantly higher mineral content, sediment load, and bacterial risk than treated BWSSB Cauvery water. Borewell water quality varies by depth, season, and proximity to construction or agricultural activity. During monsoon, surface contamination enters through poorly sealed borewell caps and recharge zones, carrying bacteria, pesticides, and other contaminants. Homes dependent on borewell water should clean their tanks every 4 to 6 months rather than annually. Periodic water quality testing alongside tank cleaning is the only way to know whether your water supply is genuinely safe for drinking and cooking.
After mechanical cleaning, tanks must be disinfected to kill bacteria that have colonised the walls and any remaining biofilm. Potassium permanganate (KMnO4) is the government-recommended disinfectant for water storage tanks. It is food-safe, effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, and leaves no harmful residue after the tank is rinsed. Cheaper alternatives like bleach (sodium hypochlorite) can corrode plastic tank walls over time and leave chlorinated byproducts in the first batches of water. KBS uses potassium permanganate solution at the correct concentration followed by a thorough rinse, the same process recommended by the Bureau of Indian Standards for domestic water storage.
Several signs indicate your water tank needs urgent attention. Brown or yellow-tinged water indicates rust or heavy sediment. A musty or earthy smell from your water suggests algae or bacterial growth. A slippery feel on tank walls when touched is biofilm. Stomach complaints among household members (particularly GI issues) after consuming only home water. Water that leaves heavy scale deposits on vessels after boiling. Any visible floating particles or discolouration. If you notice any of these signs, don't wait for the annual cleaning cycle. Call KBS for an immediate clean. Most areas of Bengaluru can be served within 24 hours.

If you use Cauvery water, once a year is enough. If you use borewell water, clean every 6 months. Borewell water carries more sediment and bacteria that settle faster.
